- Maura Abad’s first book, 42 Poems, It’s All About Context, is now available in French on Amazon Kindle.
Can a book of poems be even more lyrical and beautiful than it was originally conceived? Perhaps it is possible, if it is written in French. 42 Poems, It’s All About Context, the first collection of poems by Cuban-Ecuadorian author Maura Abad, is now available in French on Amazon’s Kindle store.
The poems in this debut collection reflect on pain, loss, and grief, but also on life’s joys and the pleasure of living with a purpose. Maura, true to her essence as a communicator and writer, has translated this book into French so that the entire French-speaking community can enjoy it with the authentic nuances she gives it.
Maura is fluent in about six languages, including French, so it is a real treat for her readers to have a work written in English, Spanish, and French by the author herself, which rules out any translation errors. Generally, experts recommend reading authors in their original language, but this is not always possible, which is why good translations are so valuable. It is not just about finding the right word, but about conveying the appropriate feeling, the rhythm of the words, and the depth of the images the author creates. For example, certain metaphors lose their power when transferred from one language to another, since cultural context also plays a significant role in their meaning. Translations cannot force rhymes that have deep meaning in the original language, because they become diluted in the effort to fit one word to another. And even when the author translates her own work, each language demands different choices, because excessive adaptation erases the text’s original intent.
Nevertheless, Maura’s effort to convey exactly what she means, now in French, is yet another example of her commitment to her readers, to poetry, and to her own literary work.
